Head, Dept. of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging,
Tata Memorial Center, Mumbai

We have entered the Silver Jubilee year of Positron Emission Tomography’s introduction in India. PET/CT has made a significant positive impact on cancer care. Every cancer patient undergoes some diagnostic nuclear medicine examination.

From the introduction of radio iodine for the treatment of thyroid diseases, Modern theranostics is ever-growing, adding newer Radiopharmaceuticals in its armamentarium. Soon, every cancer patient will benefit from some Radiotheranostics intervention. This will create better outcomes, prolong survival and improve quality of life, at an affordable cost.

For this to happen, the Radioisotope and Radiopharmaceutical producers, Reactors, Cyclotrons, and central pharmacies need to grow in number and strength. While we have shown sufficient technological might and maturity, we must overcome the existing constraints. The planned projects of a new reactor, high-energy cyclotrons, and production of alpha emitters will all take shape in the next five years.

While we have made significant contributions in clinical nuclear medicine research, more evidence needs to be generated by us, through multicentric studies. At the academic front, Nuclear medicine physicians and technologists will continue to be trained and qualified to meet our requirements.

We must work together as a single group to achieve our vision of being a country of advanced nuclear medicine practice and advance nuclear medicine industry. Let’s gather in the SNMICON 2026 to discuss and solve our outstanding issues and become stronger and more effective with each passing day.
